The salmon studio first opened in 1988, making it the first salmon studio in Norway. A group in Suldal had been working on this project for several years, including conducting research trips to Scotland to discover how to put Suldal on the map and promote the wild salmon in the municipality to national and international markets. At the time, the studio cost Suldal municipality 1 million Norwegian kroner.
