Welcome to the Viking Trail!

The Viking Trail on the Ropeid Peninsula is an interactive trail where you can learn more about the Viking history in the area and daily life on the Ropeid Peninsula.

The tour takes you along the beautiful Grytevatnet lake, which is a lovely walk close to stunning nature. Along the trail, you'll find various QR points, and by scanning these, you'll get a video or audio clip that gives you a glimpse into the history of the Peninsula. You choose whether you want to complete the entire trail, or select routes based on topics that interest you. WHAT EXACTLY IS A CULTURAL TRAIL?

The goal of the cultural trails in Suldal is to give residents and visitors a glimpse into the rich history of our various hamlets, and the municipality as a whole. Through QR points, we aim to ensure that everyone has the same great experiences and can partake in the same compelling stories, no matter when they visit during the year.

This trail is just one of several exciting cultural-historical trails in Suldal. In the municipal center of Sand, you can take the Sand Safari trail where you'll learn more about the history of the coastal town. The cultural trail in Jelsa will tell you the fascinating story behind Jelsa Church and the schoolhouse located there.

The cultural trails in Suldal are a collaborative project between Suldal Municipality, Suldal Vekst, Visit Suldal, Kulturhuset i Suldal c/o drama, Ryfylkemuseet, the hamlet committees in each individual hamlet, and a number of other local forces.

The trail is available in the app «Visit Suldal», which you can download for free from the App Store. You can use the app to scan the QR points on the signs along the trail and get more information about your current location.
