Round trips

Suldal is located at the junction between deep fjords and high mountains, two national tourist routes, the attractions Preikestolen and Trolltunga, idyllic hamlets and hidden swimming spots. Our villages are therefore the perfect starting point for exploring what the region has to offer. Here are some of our selected round trips.

Exploring the fjord islands

Sand-Marvik-Vatlandsvåg-Hebnes-Jelsa-Sand

On this road trip, you'll get up close to some of the most beautiful fjord landscapes Suldal has to offer, where the fjord lies still as far as the eye can see, and you'll find a variety of great viewpoints and hidden fjord hamlets.

The trip starts on the Ropeid peninsula where you can take a stroll through idyllic Marvik and Hebnes or enjoy an ice cream and the life in the boat harbor in Vatlandsvåg. Perhaps you'll take a trip to Grytenuten or follow the cultural-historical trail around Grytevatnet? In Hebnes, you can visit the first vineyard in Rogaland! Furthermore, you can drive to Jelsa, which is the best-preserved coastal village in Ryfylke. Here you can wander among white wooden houses in the center, and through the cultural-historical trail, you can learn more about local history. Perhaps you'll have lunch at the wonderful Jelsa Hotell or visit our fruit farm Fuglestein Fruktgard, which has its own farm shop? Along the entire route, you'll find good swimming spots, hiking trails, and cycling opportunities.

From the fjord to the high mountains, and back down again

Sand-Gullingen-Jøsenfjorden-Erfjord-Sand

On this round trip, you'll experience the best of both fjord landscapes and high mountain moors. The trip starts in the fjord village and municipal center of Sand, and takes you along the famous salmon river Suldalslågen before you turn off towards Gullingen. On small, winding roads, you quickly ascend in altitude until you reach the hiking paradise of Gullingen. Here you can enjoy fresh air, take a shower in the waterfall, swim in Mosvatnet, and explore great hiking and cycling trails. When you're done enjoying the high mountains, you take the road down via Jøsenfjorden, and follow the National Tourist Route via Erfjord back to Sand. Feel free to stop at Georg Fjellberg's memorial – a great viewpoint!

Everyday life in a bird paradise

Sand-Erfjord-Bogsund-Jelsa-Sand

Jelsa is the best-preserved coastal village in Ryfylke and has been named the most idyllic place in Rogaland, while the neighboring village of Erfjord boasts beautiful bird sanctuaries, perfect for bird lovers. The fjord road between these hamlets offers breathtaking views. Feel free to stop at Fuglestein Fruktgard's farm shop along the way or have lunch at Jelsa Hotell. By combining both hamlets, you'll experience rich cultural and natural life, while also getting close to everyday life, farms, and fjords. Jelsa Church, Jelsa School Museum, and the museum farm Hålandstunet are also excellent stops.

Hydropower and wild nature

Sand-Gullingen-Blåsjø-Sand

Spend a day in wild high-mountain nature where you can sometimes feel like you have the wilderness all to yourself! The trip starts on winding roads to Gullingen, from where you drive further towards Blåsjø on narrow construction roads with magnificent views of waterfalls, lakes, and stunning scenery. When you see an enormous dam, you'll know you're almost there! Blåsjø is Norway's largest dam complex, consisting of a total of 11 large and smaller dams. The area is an excellent starting point for hiking, cycling, and fishing.

Fjord safari to "the city"

Sand-Stavanger-Sand

Historically, the fjord route has connected the villages throughout Ryfylke, which is why Stavanger is still referred to as "the city" by most locals today. Travel through Ryfylke as people did in the past by taking the express boat from Sand to Stavanger. The trip takes approximately two hours and offers a completely new perspective on the fjord villages and the high mountains. Enjoy a few hours in the oil capital Stavanger, where you can stroll through the old town, go shopping, and visit various museums located just a short walk from the quay. In the afternoon or evening, take the same express boat back to Sand.

From fjord to glacier on our National Tourist Routes

Sand-Jondal-Rosendal-Ølen-Sand

Go from idyllic fjord villages to glacier hiking in just a few hours, along two of Norway's most stunning road stretches! On this trip, you start in the municipal center of Sand and follow National Tourist Route Ryfylke up to Røldal. From there, you continue on National Tourist Route Hardanger towards Odda and further to Jondal. From here, a variety of experiences are offered on and around the Folgefonna glacier. For a round trip, take the road back via Åkrafjorden. Along the way, you'll find a number of great experiences and viewpoints. For a longer trip, we recommend a visit to the Barony of Rosendal, dating back to 1665.

Discovery Route

The Discovery Route is the name of the historic route along RV 13 through Fjord Norway from Stavanger to Bergen, following the National Tourist Route Ryfylke and the National Tourist Route Hardanger. The route was established in the 1800s when guests traveled through Ryfylke and Hardanger by horse and carriage to experience spectacular mountains, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, and fjords. Along the route, you'll find great accommodations, experiences, and hiking areas.
