Memorial to Georg Fjellberg

Great views and local history converge at the Georg Fjellberg monument along the road between Jøsenfjorden and Gullingen.

Georg Fjellberg was one of many who sacrificed their lives for their homeland during the Second World War. He participated in the mobilization in Røldal in 1940 and was ordered to secure several rifles. He hid these in the hills near Fjellberg, about one kilometer southwest of his home.

Over time, the resistance movement in Stavanger learned about the weapons. In 1941, several members of this group were arrested. During interrogations, the Germans learned about Georg's weapons cache. He was arrested along with 16 others and sent to Oslo in November 1941. He was sentenced to death. On December 29, 33-year-old Georg Fjellberg, along with ten others, was shot at Flatmyr in Nannestad.

After the war, fellow villagers and friends from far and wide collected money and erected a memorial stone near his home.

2,000 people attended the unveiling of the memorial.

Just behind the monument, you get a great view of Hjorteland, Fjellberg, and Ulladalen.
