Jelsa – Ryfylke's best-preserved coastal village

Jelsa is Ryfylke's best-preserved coastal village and has been named the most idyllic place in Rogaland. Here you can stroll among old neighborhoods and white wooden houses. There is also a lovely swimming beach here that can be enjoyed in the summer.

Culture and History

Today, Jelsa boasts a charming collection of small houses from the 18th century. Jelsa was home to inns and trade from the late 17th century and has been a church site since the 13th century. From 1855, Jelsa was included on the steamship routes in Ryfylke.

The current church is in Renaissance style and was completed in 1647. The church was built by the finest craftsmen of its time. Several changes have been made more recently. In the 1950s, parts of the original interior decorations were restored. Not far from the center of Jelsa lies the protected rectory.

The schoolhouse, known as the Riiberg School, was built in 1774 with funds from a foundation established by Marcille Riiberg in 1755. Marcille Riiberg was the niece of Mentz Blix, the priest of Jelsa. She lived with her uncle in Jelsa for a period. Marcille must have been a wealthy woman. In 1751, she purchased both Jelsa and Sand churches. The school served as a primary school for the children of Jelsa, but also provided free two-year education for two young people at a time, enabling them to later work as itinerant teachers in the rural communities. For over 40 years, the Riiberg School sent teachers throughout Ryfylke, but in 1820, the school was closed due to financial reasons. The primary school continued in the building until the early 1900s. Following an initiative from the staff at Jelsa school, the schoolhouse was restored and converted into a museum between 1974 and 1983. Today, the Ryfylke Museum operates the schoolhouse as a museum. The church and schoolhouse have joint guided tours on fixed days during the summer season (see more in the event calendar under "What's On"). Maps are available under "Hiking" here on visitsuldal.no, at selected shops, and at Suldal tourist information. In 2022, Jelsa also got its own day-trip cabin located on Kvilehaugen.

Jelsa also has several swimming beaches, its own hotel, boat rental services, and guided kayaking tours via FjordExpedition and some of the best strawberries in the region: Jelsa strawberries.

Good accessibility: The area in Jelsa center is easily accessible with wide, paved roads. Stairs at the entrance to the church and school museum may make this somewhat challenging. The hiking map for Jelsa also includes well-adapted routes.
