Røynevarden croft

Just above Suldalsvatnet, with a beautiful view of Bråtveit and Suldalsheiane, lies the croft Røynevarden. As a croft, the dwelling can be dated back to approximately 1805.

Everything might seem small at Røynevarden, but the croft was among the best in Suldal. On average, it was possible to keep two cows, five goats, and some sheep. Potatoes were grown for household use, and grain was sown on the many small fields. Hay was cut and gathered in the hillsides and mountains.

There are a total of six houses at Røynevarden: two living houses, a barn, a sheep house, a goat house, and a utility building. The oldest house, the smokehouse (røykstova), or 'rotastova' as it's called in Suldal, is probably from the 1820s. People lived in this house until 1893, but when the family grew too large, the children had to sleep in the sheep house loft. The croft became an independent smallholding in 1915 and was abandoned in 1946.

Røynevarden is located along National Road 13 between Suldalsosen and Nesflaten. There is a path leading up from the road (approx. 200 m). Bring your packed lunch and enjoy the magnificent view over Suldalsvatnet.
