Ostasteidn rest area

On the west side of Sandsfjord Bridge, just after Sandsfjord Bridge, you'll find the spectacular rest area and viewpoint Ostasteidn, which is part of the Ryfylke National Tourist Route.

At the center of the area stands the 'wounded stone,' Ostasteidn, which will eventually be covered in moss. You'll also find two excellent viewpoints, several seating areas, toilets, and a fantastic view of Sandsfjorden and the surrounding fjord landscape. The area is wheelchair accessible.

Ostasteidn is inspired by the paintings of Lars Hertervig, who often drew inspiration from the nature of Ryfylke in his works. The charged atmosphere in Hertervig's images is incorporated into the architecture, from his early heavy and somber oil paintings to his later, brighter watercolors. Hertervig's distinctive use of light and dreamlike landscapes also characterize the stop.

The area was designed by the architectural firm KAP. In 2019, they won the Concrete Element Award for their work on Ostasteidn.

Easily accessible: The rest area is designed according to universal design principles. The paths are wide and on a flat, somewhat soft surface.
