The coastal town of Sand

A stroll through the coastal town of Sand is a wonderful experience. Along the fjord, you'll find a row of white brick houses nestled among friendly shops and cafes. Within walking distance of the center, you'll also find great experiences such as Salmon Studio, The Cultural Center in Suldal, art galleries, Neset beach, and Ryfylke Museum. In summer, the old sloop Brødrene af Sand is docked by the Ryfylke Museum in Nordenden, when it's not out on a voyage. Sand is also where the 22 km long Suldalslågen river flows into the fjord.

The coastal town of Sand is the municipal center of Suldal. Previously, the village was a natural trading hub for the Ryfylke region, as it was the junction between Saudafjorden, Hylsfjorden, Lovrafjorden, and Sandsfjorden. Traces of settlements in Sand can be found dating back to the 18th century, but the trading center flourished in the 19th century largely due to the shipbuilding industry. From the 1890s onwards, tourism also became an important source of income as the village became a significant stop on one of the country's most popular tourist routes. Large passenger ships sailed into the fjord, where tourists disembarked in Sand before traveling by horse and carriage up the valley to Suldalsosen. They then took the Suldalsdampen (Suldal Steamer) across Suldalsvatnet before continuing up Brattlandsdalen towards Røldal. From there, they could continue their journey to the fjord village of Odda, where they could proceed by sea.

Today, Sand is an idyllic hamlet and a vibrant municipal center for Suldal municipality. Close to Sandsfjorden and the Suldalslågen river, you'll find a variety of shops, including a clothing store, gift shop, bookstore, furniture store, flower shop, and more. There are also grocery stores, a workshop, a petrol station, and a Vinmonopolet (state-run liquor store). The municipal center also has several cozy cafes offering outdoor seating during the summer season. On selected days, you can also experience market sales at Sand square. Core opening hours for Sand town center are 9:00-16:00 Monday-Friday (Thursdays open late until 18:00). On Saturdays, it's open from 10:00-15:00. In the municipal center, you will also find several climbing parks where children can play while adults shop. There is also a dedicated beach with a floating pier and seating area at Neset in Nordenden. You will also find the Nesasjøhuset museum and the Suldal Cultural Centre in the town centre.

Within a short walking distance from the town centre, you will find the water park Suldal Bad, Sandsfossen, Norway's first salmon studio and a number of great hiking areas. From Hellandsnuten, you get a view of five fjords, while from Fiskebergåsen, you get a view of all of Sand. By taking the cultural-historical route "Sand safari", you will learn more about the coastal town in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The municipal centre also has two hotels. You will also find great cabin clusters a short drive from the centre.

Well adapted: The coastal town of Sand and Garaneset mainly have wide, paved areas and are accessible. Several of the shops are easily accessible, without major steps or obstacles.
