Suldal is surrounded by majestic fjords, which on fine days lie mirror-smooth between high mountains – and there's no better way to explore them than from your bike. Along the fjords, there are routes for all levels: from gentle family rides on flat roads to more challenging climbs with fantastic views. Starting points are right in the centers of Sand, Erfjord, and Jelsa. Along the way, you can stop by charming fjord villages, take a dip, or fish from shore. In Suldal, there are enough villages and small towns to explore a new place every single day of the week! How about a village safari? Jelsa is the best-preserved coastal village in Ryfylke, with white wooden houses clustered tightly against the fjord. Visit Jelsa Church and perhaps combine it with a swim in the fjord at the nearby beach. In Erfjord, you can visit the Hålandstunet museum farm and go birdwatching, take a hike, or swim in Habn. On the Ropeid peninsula, you can find Viking graves and memorials to Ryfylke's greatest Viking chieftain! Hebnes Vineyard is also located here, open for tours and wine tasting during the summer season (remember to book on their website). Through our cultural-historical trails you can be taken back several hundred years in time and learn about Suldal's rich history from local storytellers – directly via your own mobile phone. In the municipal center of Sand you'll find a variety of local shops, cafes, museums, a swimming beach, and a cultural center – all just a stone's throw from the fjord!
Are you an experienced salmon angler or a beginner? In Suldal, you'll find fishing opportunities suited to all preferences and skill levels. Suldalslågen is Western Norway's most water-rich river, attracting salmon anglers from far and wide every year, all trying their luck at catching a big salmon. The record salmon was caught in 1913 and weighed 34kg! Here, private fishing, guided fishing trips, salmon safaris, and river expeditions are offered. The Ulla River in Ulladalen, which flows into Jøsenfjorden, is also a salmon river open for fishing. Remember to familiarize yourself with local rules and pay the fishing fee before casting your line. You can also learn more about the Suldal salmon at Norway's first salmon studio. In the mountains, you'll find great fishing lakes where you can enjoy fresh air and the sound of jumping fish. Here, there are opportunities to catch large trout, and fishing licenses for these excellent fishing lakes are available on inatur.no. The fishing trip can be combined with a camping trip or an overnight stay at DNT cabins. The fjord is also full of various fish, offering good opportunities to catch your dinner for the day.

In Suldal, you can also visit the producers themselves at their beautiful farms nestled close to mountains, fjords, and lakes. At Hebnes Vineyard on the Ropeid peninsula, you'll get an up-close look at wine production with a visit to the vineyard, and of course, there will be time for some tasting! Fuglestein Fruit Farm boasts over 17,000 apple trees, where you can learn more about their production and sample their various products. At Suldalshonning, you can gain insight into the important and fascinating life of bees and witness the honey production process firsthand. In Suldal, you can choose new swimming spots for the family every single day! All our villages have wonderful swimming spots that you can have all to yourself, in both saltwater and freshwater. Here, you can enjoy a full day at Mosvatnet, which can be combined with a hike in the mountains, a boat trip to the nearest island, and a refreshing shower in the waterfall leading up to Onglaniuten. At Neset beach in the municipal center of Sand, you can rent beach equipment and kayaks, or practice your balance in the climbing park. In Erfjord, you can enjoy a day by the fjord at Habn beach, or you can jump into the sea at Jelsa – the best-preserved coastal village in Ryfylke. Otherwise, find swimming spots along the fjord or in mountain lakes throughout the region.
At Suldal Bad you can challenge the family to a competition on the slide, from the diving boards, and on the climbing wall, or relax in the hot tub or sauna. You can also treat the family to an evening in a sauna or hot tub with views over Suldalsvatnet, Sandsfjorden, or Suldalslågen.
In Suldal, you'll find a number of excellent museum facilities that can be explored both during and outside opening hours. At Nesasjøhuset you'll meet the White Bear from Rasmus Løland's children's fairy tale, at Suldal Cultural Centre you can visit a gallery exhibition, from the cluster farm Litunet you get a majestic view of Hylsfjorden, and at the estate Kolbeinstveit you can visit Rogaland's oldest wooden building! You'll also find bowling, a cinema, a library, and events at Suldal Cultural Centre. Børkjenes farm in Hamrabø offers guided tours both indoors and outdoors by appointment.
The Suldal-Sauda-Røldal architectural tour offers world-class historical and modern architecture. The route boasts the best collection of architectural works in Fjord Norway and is the only National Tourist Route that presents both historical and modern architecture in a day-trip format. At Kilen in Nesflaten, you'll encounter a functionalist style from the 1960s power development; at Ropeid, the fjord enters the windows of the "waiting room"; you can be inspired by Lars Hertervig at Ostasteidn, and at Høsebrua, you can see the Suldalslågen river rushing beneath your feet. In Sauda, you'll experience the natural forces of Svandalsfossen waterfall and gain new impressions in Almannajuvet gorge, and in Røldal, you can visit the stave church before the journey down Brattlandsdalen valley offers the majestic Flesefossen waterfall.
In summer, there's plenty of fun to be had throughout the municipality. You can catch art exhibitions and cinema screenings at Suldal Cultural Centre, take a journey back in history at the Ryfylke Museum's farmsteads, explore the hand-painted starry sky in Jelsa church and experience fjord idyll during market days in Sand town centre. Suldal is a great starting point for exploring the region, located between Preikestolen and Trolltunga. National Tourist Route Ryfylke and Discovery Route pass through the municipality, while National Tourist Route Hardanger is nearby. Folgefonna, the Barony Rosendal, Røldal stave church, Åkrafjorden, Haugalandet, and Stavanger are great stops if you embark on a day trip.
