Jelsa Church and the School Museum

Jelsa has been named the most idyllic place in Ryfylke, and for good reason! Jelsa stands out with its small, white wooden houses close to the fjord, and boasts a vibrant atmosphere on fine summer days. During a visit to Jelsa, you should stop by Jelsa Church and the School Museum.

Jelsa Church was completed in 1647, but its history stretches back to the Viking Age when Jelsa was a gathering point for religious offerings. On the site where the church stands today, there was also previously a stave church mentioned in sources as early as 1286. Today, Jelsa Church is a magnificent wooden building, given a unique character by the artistry of Gottfried Hendtzcel. The church ceiling is covered like a starry sky with thousands of stars that beautifully complement the splendid decorations on the walls, benches, and other ornaments. The church is still in use today and is operated by the Church in Suldal.

The School Museum, located next to the church, was established in 1774 and is one of the first school buildings in Ryfylke. The school was built with funds from "Den Riibergske Stiftelse," which was founded by Marcille Riiberg in 1755. The building served as a school for young people who would later become teachers in the itinerant school system, and later functioned as a primary school. The last students graduated in the 20th century. Today, the schoolhouse is owned by Ryfylke Museum.

The church and schoolhouse are open on fixed days during the summer season. Opening hours and prices can be found in our event calendar under "What's On." Outside of opening hours, Jelsa Hotell offers guided tours for groups. Read more at jelsahotell.no.
